East Michigan twilight meetings for commercial vegetable growers

Join us July 20, 26 and 27 for our evening meetings to discuss the challenges and opportunities of the current growing season.

Three growers have graciously agreed to host evening meetings during the 2011 production season in southeastern Michigan. We will hear from our MSU Extension specialists, view crops in the field and discuss the challenges and opportunities of the current season. You are invited to any and all of these programs, but please let me know if you plan to attend so we will have dinner and materials for you. Pesticide credits will be offered.

Wednesday, July 20, 6:00 to 9:00 PM. Please call or email to pre-register by July 18.

Host: Mike Pirrone Produce, 15313 Bryce Road, Capac (West Mill Street, west of Capac).

We will leave promptly at 6:00 PM to see trellised and row-tunneled vegetables on drip irrigation. MSU updates will be presented by

  • Mary Hausbeck, vegetable and floriculture pathology specialist
  • Zsofia Szendrei, vegetable entomology specialist
  • Katherine Hale, MSU Extension educator, Farm to Institution programming
  • Bernard Zandstra, weed control specialist

Host: Horkey Brothers, 15175 Dixon, Dundee (Dixon and Lloyd).

The Horkeys have a scouting program that includes insect and disease monitoring that we will see as we view crops in the field. MSU updates will be presented by

  • Paul Marks, IPM scout and former MSU Extension educator
  • Brenda Reau, MSU Extension educator, Using Marketmaker

Host: George DeBruyn Farm, 76048 McFadden Road, Armada (1/2 mile north of Armada Center).

We will tour nearby fields of tomatoes, peppers, melons and other upland crops. MSU updates will be presented by

  • Mathieu Ngouajio, vegetable specialist with research emphasis on cover crops and season Extension
  • Katherine Hale, MSU Extension educator, Farm to Institution programming
  • Hannah Stevens, MSU Extension educator, crop updates and observations
