FCCP facilitates forest carbon pathways workshop at Tuskegee University
FCCP facilitates a forest carbon pathways workshop at Tuskegee University with the Forest Owner Carbon and Climate Education Program to build forest and carbon resilience among landowners, students, and professionals.
Dr. Chad Papa, FCCP Director, co-facilitated a forest carbon pathways workshop at Tuskegee University with the Pennsylvania State University Forest Owner Carbon and Climate Education Program (FOCCE). The workshop aimed to build community and confidence around engaging landowners on topics related to managing forests for carbon payments. Through interactive small group discussions, breakout sessions, and field tours, participants received hands-on experience about forest carbon management in the southeast US, including potential threats and disturbances to forests, what a carbon contract entails, and how carbon management strategies can align with other adaptation goals.
During the field tours, participants learned the basics of carbon inventorying, carbon accounting, and practical introductions to forest planning with carbon considerations. The workshop also featured a bonus session led by Dr. Melissa Kreye, FOCCE director and workshop organizer, on how to design an extension program with strategies for engaging with adult education and developing a logic model to plan and evaluate a program.
The Forest Owner Carbon and Climate Education (FOCCE) program is a collaboration between thirteen university extension divisions and three USDA Climate Hubs to facilitate a basic understanding of forest carbon and climate issues, provide access to new and existing tools and resources, foster a community around carbon and climate topics, reach underserved categories of forest owners, and advocate for more diverse and inclusive carbon incentive strategies.
