Ensuring the Integrity of Forest Carbon Offsets: the Role of Verification

Speakers

  • Christie Pollet-Young is the Director of SCS’ Greenhouse Gas Verification Program. Ms. Pollet-Young has over 25 years of experience in forestry, including forest management, forest ecology research, conservation planning, and carbon offset verification in both tropical and temperate climes. She has previously worked for the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute’s Center for Tropical Forest Science and The Nature Conservancy. Ms. Pollet-Young completed a Master of Forest Science from the Yale School of the Environment and graduated with high honors from the University of California, Berkeley with a Bachelor of Science. Ms. Pollet-Young is a lead auditor with SCS who has participated in the validation or verification of over 50 forest carbon offset projects around the globe under the Climate Action Reserve, the Verified Carbon Standard, the Climate, Community and Biodiversity Standards, the Gold Standard, and the California Air Resources Board’ Cap and Trade Program.
  • Alexa Dugan is a Greenhouse Gas Verification Forester at SCS Global Services. Ms. Dugan has over 10 years of experience in forest ecology, including forest carbon research, modeling, offset verification, and forest inventory. Prior to joining SCS, Ms. Dugan worked for the U.S. Forest Service where she developed forest carbon assessments across the National Forest System and modeled forest sector climate change mitigation scenarios for several state partners. Alexa holds Master’s in Geography from the University of Wyoming where she researched historical wildfire dynamics in Ponderosa pine ecosystems. She completed her B.S. in Geography with minors in GIS, Spanish, and International Studies at Pennsylvania State University.

Description 

Assessing potential for large-scale reforestation projects to store carbon and provide a business investment. Understanding limitations and barriers to broad reforestation, including risks of mortality. Identifying climate-smart approaches to scale forest interventions to ensure healthy forests in the future and protect investment.
