Feeding pigs in a high feed cost environment

2010 National Swine Nutrition Guide contains information about feeding pigs and controlling costs when feed ingredients are expensive.

Generally speaking, feed represents 65 to 75% of the overall production cost in a swine operation. The primary goal of a nutrition program is to provide a balanced diet that ensures appropriate nutrient consumption and maximizes performance. Management decisions consider feed ingredient availability, cost, proper diet formulation, and the nutrient requirements of pigs within each respective production stage.

The National Swine Nutrition Guide is a publication about feeding swine and was written in a collaborative effort between university swine nutritionists and swine industry specialists. There are many comprehensive and current fact sheets within the guide, including ones about: use of by-product feed ingredients in swine diets, purchasing high quality feed ingredients, feed processing and manufacturing, utilization of weather stressed feedstuffs, methods of supplying nutrients and feed ingredient sampling and analysis. The information found in this Guide may prove valuable in helping choose ingredients, determine lowest nutrient cost, and avoid any compromise in pig growth performance.
