Huron County weather observation network – June 2011

A synopsis of June 2011 weather in Huron County.

For more than 30 years, select cooperators from around Huron County have assisted in collecting weather data, including rainfall and growing-degree days (GDD) base 50°F at their farms.

Twenty-four cooperators returned rainfall accumulations for the month of June. The average rainfall for those reported for the month was 3.86 inches. The distribution across the county was generally uniform. The greatest accumulation, 5.45 inches, was recorded in Windsor Township, near Pigeon, Mich. The least amount of accumulation, 2.50 inches, was recorded in Sigel Township, near Harbor Beach, Mich.

Rainfall accumulation for June 2010 in Huron County was 5.61 inches, or 1.75 inches more than this year. The 20-year average has been 3.22 inches of rainfall accumulation, or 0.64 inches less than June 2011.

Total 2011 Huron County rainfall accumulation for the months of May and June has been 7.41 inches, compared to 9.95 inches for the same two months of 2010, and a 20-year average of 6.57.

Four cooperators collected GDD data. The average accumulation in the county for the month of June was 472.6 GDD base 50°F. The June 2010 GDD accumulation for Huron County was 494.4 GDD base 50°F, or 21.8 GDDs more than this year. The 20-year average has been 465.0 GDD base 50°F, or 7.6 GDDs fewer than this year.

Total 2011 Huron County GDD accumulation for the months of May and June has been 744.5, compared to 864.5 for the same two months in 2010 and a 20-year average of 659.
