4-H Success Story – Katelyn Schley

4-H has been a large part of my life for the last six years. It has given me many opportunities, smiles, laughs and learning moments; but, it has also given me an understanding of order, lots of patience and a family – of whom I know I can rely on for anything. To me, 4-H has been an essential part of becoming a young adult and creating personal connections that will last forever.

As a kid, I came into the organization late. I did not enter as a Cloverbud – where I grew up with each competitor I was competing against. I came in as a junior. Full of energy and wanting to help any way possible. Although, I didn’t know anyone. 4-H and the subcommittees within it, gave me an opportunity and chance to help; even though, they didn’t know me. I took roles as the Youth Equestrian Program Committee Treasurer, the Small Animal Committee Secretary and helped on sub-committees as they were needed. 4-H taught me how to manage money, have patience when waiting on others and most definitely, taught me Robert’s Rules of Order. 4-H put a trust in me that allowed me to grow not only in my roles for the organization but in life.

In my later years of 4-H, I was given the opportunity to receive two show rabbits from my club leader. This started the spark in which I would develop a serious hobby in rabbit raising and breeding. I also learned how to educate others about rabbits. I started competing local and at the state level as a representative of Cheboygan County. I brought as much as possible back to my club and the organization. Now, as a senior in high school, who is heading to college, I am privileged to share my knowledge and give my show stock to aspiring 4-H’ers. I hope to see not only my rabbits continue with this program, but also the lasting effects of my knowledge that I have shared with those in the program.

I have been gifted with six long years with the 4-H Program, where I have had many successes, gains and opportunities. I am blessed to have been a part of this program and I look forward to new roles in the future to hopefully become a club leader.
