Kenneth Christiansen Collembola Collection now part of the ARC

Through the efforts of Dr. Richard Snider, arrangements had been made to bring the Ken Christiansen Collembola Collection to MSU upon Ken’s retirement from Grinnell College in Iowa. On May 2-3, Anthony Cognato and Gary Parsons drove to Iowa to pick up this collection, which at the time was being stored in Ken’s garage! This collection is significant because it was the basis for the multi- volume, 1520 page work on the Collembola of North America North of the Rio Grande by Christiansen and Peter F. Bellinger. This collection, combined with Dr. Snider’s collembola collection, will give the ARC one of the pre-eminent Collembola collections in North America. Unfortunately, much work needs to be done curating the collection, including replenishing alcohol, and re-mounting and relabeling many of the slides which have deteriorated over the years. We are also in the process of identifying a permanent facility to house both the Christiansen and Snider collections within the space of the ARC.
