Since Kettunen Center opened its doors in 1961, it has always had a strong connection with the environment. Recently, the center received recognition for its efforts from the Michigan Department of Energy, Labor and Economic Growth (DELEG).

The Green Lodging Michigan (GLM) program was created to encourage facilities to implement environmental initiatives and cost-saving green practices to conserve energy and reduce water consumption and waste.

In November of 2007, Kettunen Center received Partner level certification from the GLM program. In order to reach this level, the facility had to comply with a number of initiatives on the GLM self-assessment checklist. This checklist has eight categories that list different initiatives that can be checked off when implemented. There are also 10 environmental requirements that must be met in order to be certified.

In March of 2009, Kettunen Center was the first facility in the state to move from Partner level to Steward level. In order to reach the next level, DELEG made a site visit to Kettunen Center, reviewing initiatives and offering suggestions for improvements.

Among the initiatives checked were our extensive recycling program for guests and staff; the use of LED lights and light sensors in meeting rooms, lounges and restrooms; a towel and linen reuse program; and an evaluation of all cleaning products to ensure each is safe and earth friendly. The landscaping was reviewed to make certain that native plants are being used and that watering is done in the early morning or evening to reduce water consumption.

“Kettunen Center has had a strong environmental ethic as one of its many core values for many years. It’s a part of our mission,” said Kettunen Center director John Grix.

Kettunen Center is dedicated to the importance of environmental stewardship. If you would like to find out more about this program or see the current listing of certified businesses, visit http://www.michigan.gov.
