Learning in the field: A new video series for outdoor pasture pig producers
Outdoor pasture pig video series for small and beginning swine farmers.
Raising pigs on pasture or in outdoor systems is a unique and rewarding approach to farming. It emphasizes animal welfare, soil health and independence. It also demands a deep understanding of pigs' interactions with land, fencing, feed and humans. For small-scale producers, especially those just starting or expanding their herds, a reliable, hands-on education can be scarce. That’s where our exclusive new video series from Michigan State University Extension comes in. The series is designed to provide practical knowledge and information necessary for success in pasture-based pig farming, giving producers a competitive advantage in the field.
This six-part educational video series, developed in collaboration with experienced pasture-based pig farmers across Michigan, aims to provide practical, visually rich instruction that supports beginning and small-scale producers raising pigs outdoors. Each video is filmed on working farms and features real farmers demonstrating the tools, techniques, and decision-making processes they use daily.
Instead of focusing on abstract concepts, this video series takes viewers directly into the pasture, showing practical knowledge and expertise. Listeners are guided through the various aspects of pasture-based pig farming, including seasonal approaches, land requirements, water setup, manure management and a feeding program. These videos are designed to equip producers with the knowledge and skills necessary for success in a pasture-based farming system, empowering viewers to feel capable and confident in their decision-making abilities.
The format of the series is designed with the busy schedules of farmers in mind. Each video is under six minutes long and packed with visuals, valuable information, and clickable documents that give more detailed information on specific topics. Subtitles are available in English and Spanish, and all videos are freely accessible through both the MSU Extension Animal Ag YouTube channel and the MSU Extension website.

In a world where much of the swine education available is still tailored to large, confinement-based operations, this series offers a distinct approach. Knowledge that’s grounded in the needs, scale and values of independent, pasture-based farmers. It’s not about one-size-fits-all solutions; it is about empowering producers to make informed, confident decisions that support the success of their outdoor herds.
For small-scale pig farmers raising animals on pasture, woodlots, or in other outdoor systems, this is more than a video series. It’s a practical tool for developing skills, addressing challenges and promoting innovation in sustainable livestock production. These videos serve as a source of inspiration and motivation for small-scale outdoor system pig farmers.
