Macomb County agriculture celebration

Free family farm fun as Westview Orchards celebrates 200 years.

Westview Orchards Bicentennial Celebration will take place on Saturday, June 29, 2013 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Bicentennial Celebration will offer visitors opportunities to learn about agriculture and farming operations in a fun setting. Visitors will be able to take guided farm tours, wagon rides, visit educational stations, climb aboard farm equipment and pet farm animals. The tours and activities are all free.

This event will give residents a chance to come face to face with a farm family that has been in business for 200 years in Macomb County. Westview Orchards wants to demonstrate first hand how they grow wholesome local food and what is involved in producing food that shows up at local grocery stores and farmers markets.

There will be free samples, photo opportunities with the modern John Deere tractor and special educational offerings featuring short sessions on Smart Gardening, Fruit Preservation Tips and Worm Composting. Educational Tours include learning about Integrated Pest Management, the MSU Enviro-weather Station, honeybees, and more.

Special presentations and recognition will be given by County Executive Mark Hackel, Farm Bureau, Michigan Centennial Farm Association and State and Local Government officials starting at 11 a.m.

Special Exhibits include the Michigan AG Council, Michigan Corn Growers Association, Macomb County Farm Bureau, Michigan Wine and Grape Council, Macomb Food Collaborative and many others.

Sponsors for the event include Michigan State University Extension, Michigan Farm Bureau, Michigan Agriculture Environmental Assurance Program, Macomb Agricultural PDR Committee, and Pure Michigan.
