Magdalena Kortebein, FSHN Dietetics student, shares her experience with the program and what receiving the Constance Parks Hagelshaw and Doretha June Hagelshaw Scholarship Fund and the Iva Robb Jadel Memorial Scholarship has meant for her.
Name: Magdalena Kortebein
Hometown: Warren, MI
Major: Dietetics
Why did you choose MSU FSHN for your major?
Growing up someone who was very active and involved in many sports, I have always had a passion for health and well-being. Dietetics opened a door to a world of knowledge and opportunities that has shown me it is possible to enhance peoples' quality of life, both preventatively and as a matter of recovery.
What has been the most interesting thing you have learned during your major?
The most impactful thing I have learned in my major so far is that while everyone is different and comes from diverse backgrounds, the necessity for food and the nutrients it provides is something that unites people. While the type of food varies, as does the way it is engrained in our cultural fabric, it has the same capacity to nourish, bring people together, and enhance life day-to-day.
What has receiving the Future Leaders Mentoring Scholarship meant to you?
Receiving my FSHN scholarship has helped alleviate a lot of financial stress as someone who is responsible for paying for the entirety of her higher education. I typically work two jobs as a full-time student to support my future goals, so these scholarships in part allow me to spend more time learning and exploring other experiences like volunteering.
What are your future plans?
My goal is to earn my credential as a registered dietitian and begin work in a clinical setting. From there I would like to explore a focus in Behavioral Health Nutrition and potentially work with individuals struggling with mental health and developmental disabilities.
If there was only one thing you could share with someone considering MSU FSHN for their undergraduate experience, what would you tell them?
If I was only going to share one thing with someone considering MSU FSHN for their undergraduate education, I would inform them of the incredible faculty we have. Every professor and advisor I have encountered has such a wealth of knowledge and experience that they are very willing to share. To know your future is so individually invested in and cared about is a wonderful feeling.
