Marilyn Thelen named associate director for MSU Extension agriculture programming and initiatives

Thelen has been a valued MSU Extension staff member since 1984.

EAST LANSING, MI – Marilyn Thelen has been selected as the first associate director of the Michigan State University (MSU) Extension Agriculture and Agribusiness Institute. The St. Johns’ resident was chosen after an extensive search and selection process that highlighted her experience working with farmers and agriculture communities.

Ron Bates, director the institute, said Thelen’s background makes her a perfect fit for this position.

“Marilyn will provide critical leadership to MSU Extension programming and lead the formation of program direction on critical issues facing agriculture,” Bates explained. “She will work closely with nearly 100 team members spread throughout the state to develop programming to address critical challenges and opportunities facing agriculture.”

Thelen first joined MSU Extension in 1984, and then returned in 2001 after gaining experience with the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and as an MSU research associate. In addition to being an MSU Extension educator focusing on cropping and livestock systems, she has served as the Clinton County Extension director and interned as a district coordinator—both positions that helped her hone her management skills.

“This position gives me an opportunity to combine my management experience with my passion for working with farmers and agribusiness leaders,” Thelen said. “By working together, we can move Michigan agriculture forward in a manner that is sustainable to farm families, our communities and Michigan’s environment.”

Jeff Dwyer, director of MSU Extension, said Thelen rounds out a team of administrators charged with taking the vast knowledge resources of MSU directly to farmers, individuals, communities and businesses throughout Michigan.

“Marilyn’s practical, on-the ground experience with farmers and farm families brings great insight to our leadership team,” Dwyer said.

Thelen begins her new role on Dec. 27.
