Providing opportunities for youth to share their voice through youth-adult partnerships is a key focus of Michigan 4-H Youth Development. 4-H clubs are the best when youth are running meetings and the program as a whole is richer when youth can influence decisions in programming efforts. In 2015, the Michigan 4-H State Youth Leadership Council was created to do just that in a statewide setting.

State Youth Leadership Council brings teen leaders from across Michigan together to provide authentic youth voice in Michigan 4-H youth programs and to assist with promoting 4-H programs on a statewide level. The Michigan 4-H State Youth Leadership Council provides a high-level leadership opportunity for older youth to learn about 4-H beyond their own experiences by talking with and learning from 4-H members across the state.

State Youth Leadership Council member Addy Battel reflects on her experience, saying, "State Youth Leadership Council has given me an opportunity to further hone my leadership skills in ways that are only possible when surrounded by peers with similar passions.”

State Youth Leadership Council members meet two to three times in person throughout the year during statewide 4-H events like 4-H Exploration Days. Additionally, State Youth Leadership Council members meet once per month by calling in or logging into an online telecommunication platform. During these meetings, youth learn from each other about the wide variety of 4-H experiences offered around the state while working to build their leadership and communication skills.

State Youth Leadership Council member Torey Fischer adds, “State Youth Leadership Council has been such a great experience that has not only allowed me to build my leadership, teamwork and communication skills, but has also opened doors and provided opportunities for my future that I am still discovering even as my 4-H career is coming to a close.”

Applications are now available for the 2020 Michigan 4-H State Youth Leadership Council. 4-H members aged 15-19 as of Jan. 1, 2020, are encouraged to apply for a two-year seat on the council by applying online. Two recommendations are also required for each applicant, one being from the local 4-H program coordinator. The deadline to apply is Oct. 28, 2019.
