The American Fisheries Society (AFS) will honor Bill Taylor and his student, Marissa Hammond, with the Distinguished Service Award at the organization’s annual meeting in September.

Bill Taylor

The Distinguished Service Award was established in 1980 to recognize members who have made outstanding contributions of time and energy for special projects and activities of AFS.

They will receive the award at the Sept. 9 in Little Rock, Ark.

Taylor, the University Distinguished Professor in Global Fisheries Systems in the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife, and member of the MSU Center for Systems Integration and Sustainability (CSIS), is an internationally recognized expert in Great Lakes fisheries ecology, population dynamics, governance, and management.

He has been active in the AFS, serving as president of the society, the Michigan Chapter, and the North Central Division.

Hammond is a master’s student in CSIS studying the impact of year-class strength on recruitment of lake whitefish into the commercial fishery of the Upper Great Lakes, along with subsequent management implications.
