EAST LANSING, Mich. – For 5-year-old Aidan Rouse, of Alpena, Mich., the Michigan State University (MSU) Dairy Store’s recent “Name the Bowl Flavor Contest” gave him the chance to combine two of his favorite things: chocolate ice cream and football.

Aidan, and his parents, Jason and Tanya Rouse, joined MSU Dairy Store manager John Engstrom for the unveiling of the new flavor on Monday, Dec. 20, at the MSU Dairy Store.

Aidan’s idea: Dantonio’s Double Fudge Fake, named for Coach Mark Dantonio and his affinity for trick plays this year.

The flavor features chocolate ice cream, mixed with a butter fudge base, a caramel swirl, chewy chocolate brownies and milk chocolate caramel-filled footballs.

Engstrom said he thinks the flavor has the potential to be a perennial favorite.

Although Engstrom says they added the footballs to heighten the football theme, the flavor is exactly what Aidan submitted.

Aiden was very excited, says his father, Jason.

“We heard about the contest on Facebook after the Spartans played Notre Dame,” Jason Rouse says. “Aiden loves chocolate. It’s the flavor he always chooses when we come to the Dairy Store.

“So, when we talked about a flavor to submit, it had to be chocolate – the more the better,” he added.

Jason Rouse, who is originally from Holt, Mich., says Aidan is a member of the Junior Spartan Club, so he went to his first Spartans game this year (versus Northern Colorado). The family always makes a stop at the MSU Dairy Store when they’re in town.

There were more than 150 entries to the contest, all submitted via e-mail, Engstrom says. Flavors were selected by MSU Dairy Store personnel and MSU athletic director Mark Hollis.

A kindergartener at Hanks Elementary, Aidan won the ice cream that he named and took some back to Alpena. He was also the recipient of an autographed football from Coach Dantonio and a gift certificate for admission to the 2011 College of Agriculture and Natural Resources annual Autumnfest tailgate.

The MSU Dairy Store has two campus locations: Anthony Hall and the MSU Union. Thirty-two flavors are featured at the Anthony Hall location; 20 flavors are featured at the MSU Union location – all on a rotating basis. The MSU Dairy Store’s mission is to provide hands-on experience for students producing top-quality ice cream and cheese. It serves as an important resource for the dairy and food processing industries in Michigan to aid in the training of regulatory personnel, food plant managers and other processing industry professionals.

Plans are underway to get the new flavor to the MSU Alumni Association’s Tailgate before the Capital One Bowl Game in Orlando, Fla., on Jan. 1, 2011 when MSU takes on Alabama.
