Earlier today, the MSU School of Planning, Design and Construction (SPDC) and the Eli Broad College of Business welcomed the Michigan State community to join them on campus for an interactive live viewing of the Opening Ceremony of the Sochi Winter Olympic Games via the CBC. Tonight, at 7:30 p.m., viewers who missed the live showing will have a second chance to participate in this social media event when NBC broadcasts a delayed version of the Opening Ceremony.

During this time, interested viewers are invited to use Twitter and Facebook to share their insights and views on their experience of watching the Opening Ceremony. Tweet to #MSUSOCHI or @MEPupdates and/or post to Facebook via the Mega Event Planning Group.

Additionally, this event is related to the on-going free MSU MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) on Mega Events: Inside the Winter Olympics offered by SPDC and MSUGlobal. This five-week course is managed by Dr. Mark Wilson, Professor of Urban & Regional Planning (URP) at SPDC; Dr. Eva Kassens-Noor, Assistant Professor of URP at SPDC and the MSU Global Urban Studies Program; and Dr. Lisa Robinson, head of metadata management at MSU Libraries.

Participants of the MOOC will also have an opportunity to join the discussion forums of the online course during the two viewing times of the Opening Ceremony. The MOOC includes participants from all over the world, so the MSU professors hope for a wide range of views on the live and delayed broadcasts.

While the course opened on Monday, Jan. 27,  registration is still available and encouraged. The MOOC runs through Saturday, March 1. Modules within the MOOC take about 20-30 minutes to complete and include short quizzes, feature video lectures and discussion forums, and offers social media interaction, so it is very easy to step in at any point and engage in this exciting experience.
