Nature's Engineers Camp: Day 1

Let's start the week of fun!

Nature's Engineers Camp: Day 1

IMG_4601Chickens!

A good way to start the morning is to introduce yourself to other campers as well as get to know them a bit better. Just like with our campers, we go to introduce them to the chickens here at MSU Tollgate. Campers got to give the chickens some water to drink, since it was definitely a very hot day. The chickens were very grateful, and in return some campers got to hold them!

Hummus & PancakesIMG_4624

As you can imagine at Tollgate Farms we have very yummy recipes that we make so campers learn how create, then eat the foods they make. Today's two recipes were Black Bean Hummus and Sweet Potato Pancakes! All the recipes that the campers make, they get to take home on recipe cards. For parents at home, we will publish an entire list of all the week's recipes for you to have, by Saturday.

Yay Hayride! Campers got to sit in our giant wagon and get pulled around the entire farm by our amazing Camp Leaders, and learn about the forest, as well as the animals that live in it. One group even saw a fox cross their path while they were riding around!

STEAM: Hurricane HouseIMG_4643

Every week the campers have to focus on one main project, and this week it was building Hurricane Houses, or buildings that can withstand the force of a Hurricane. Campers got to think about designing and begin forming their supportive structures today.

IMG_4631Casting Practice

What do you do if you don't know how to cast a fishing line? You practice! Today campers got to practice casting their fishing lines on the grass, how to properly reel in the line after you throw it, and each camper got to practice for at least 5 minutes each. Tomorrow, we really go fishing!

Green Been HarvestIMG_4623

Part of being on a farm means dealing with harvest! Today campers got to harvest some green beans that were ready to be picked. Other campers got to weed the carrots and potatoes, other got to give the plants some water. All in all, everybody got to do a little bit of everything. As we get further into the week, the campers get to explore more of our gardens and help out with harvesting more things!
