New herbicide registrations for Roundup Ready sugarbeets

Over the last week, there have been four new product registrations in Roundup Ready sugarbeets. The products Touchdown Total, Traxion, and Touchdown HiTech are all glyphosate formulations that can now be applied to Roundup Ready sugarbeets. Touchdown Total and Traxion both contain 4.17 pounds of glyphosate acid per gallon of product, so the typical use rate for these products are 24 fl oz/A, which is equivalent to 0.75 lb ae/A. Both of these products include a built-in adjuvant package, so no additional surfactant is needed. Touchdown HiTech is a 5.0 pound glyphosate acid per gallon, so the use rate is 20 fl oz/A to be equivalent to the 0.75 lb ae/A. Additional surfactant must be added to Touchdown HiTech for maximum effectiveness. A high quality non-ionic surfactant or wetting agent needs to be added at 0.25 percent v/v (1 quart NIS per 100 gallons of spray solution). As with all glyphosate products, there are maximum application rate restrictions that need to be followed. Maximum in crop glyphosate application rates include two applications prior to 8-leaf sugarbeet totaling 60 fl oz/A of Touchdown Total and Traxion (1.9 lb ae/A) with a maximum single application rate of 35 fl oz/A. Two applications are also allowed after the 8-leaf stage until 30-days prior to harvest totaling 48 fl oz/A of Touchdown Total and Traxion (1.5 lb ae/A) with a with a single application rate of 24 fl oz/A. Ammonium sulfate (AMS) at 17 lb/100 gal should always be added to maximize glyphosate performance.

Sequence 5.25EW is the fourth product that has received a registration for use in Roundup Ready sugarbeets. Sequence is a premixture that is a combination of s-metolachlor (Dual Magnum) and the full-loaded K+ formulation of glyphosate (Touchdown Total). Sequence can be applied over the top of Roundup Ready sugarbeet from the 2-true leaf stage to canopy closure. Sugarbeet should not be harvested within 60 days of the last Sequence application. This premix is designed to control existing weeds and provide residual control of grasses and some small-seeded broadleaf weeds, including pigweeds and nightshade. The typical use rate of Sequence in Roundup Ready sugarbeets is 2.5 pts/A, which contains 0.98 pt/A of Dual Magnum and 22 fl oz/A of Touchdown Total. On fine and medium textured soils, a rate of 3 pts/A can be used if applied prior to the 8-true leaf stage of sugarbeet. As with all glyphosate products, ammonium sulfate (AMS) at 17 lb/100 gal should be added to improve the consistency of weed control.
