Onions: Don’t cry out loud

I don’t want to cry anymore!

I have searched and searched to find a way that works for me to successfully cut an onion and not cry. I usually get my oldest son to cut them, but he has threatened to move out of the house due to this. I asked around and everyone has given me a different story. One person said run the water while cutting as the water absorbs the fumes – I guess I had the wrong onion. Another said wear gloves, your hands are absorbing the juice – I cried with gloved hands. I love onions but I was ready to give them up.

According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), onions are a great source of calcium. One cup of sliced onions equals 26 grams of calcium. Michigan State University Extension says that onions are also high in potassium and low in sodium. The USDA has a great basic report on onions and other vegetable nutrients. Onions come in a wonderful selection with different tastes. There are sweet Vidalia onions that are great sautéed on a steak and red/purple onions which are commonly used in salads.

I really didn’t want to give up onions. After trying several things to keep away the tears, this is what is working for me now: I put the onion in the refrigerator 30 minutes prior to cutting it. Then I cut it on the counter near the stove so I can turn the stove vent on. I am now eating more onions because I am tear free!
