“April showers bring May flowers,” but what do you do with kids on those rainy days when heading outside to burn off some energy isn’t an option? You can still have fun and be active when you are stuck inside on a bad weather day. Use some of these ideas to help plan fun, active, indoor activities.

  • Make a hopscotch outline using masking tape and have a hopscotch challenge
  • Play hide and seek
  • Complete a clothespin drop using a container and clothespins. Don’t have clothespins? No problem, use a rolled up sock
  • Pick a favorite book and act it out like a play
  • Build a tent and have a camp out in the woods
  • Make puppets and have a puppet show
  • Gather materials from around the house such as plastic spoons, cups, tape, rubber bands, etc. and see how tall of a tower you can build together
  • Put on music and have a dance party
  • Hide an object in a room and play hot and cold – have the child try and find the object by giving them clues “hot” for when they are getting close to the object and “cold” for whey they are moving further awar from the object
  • Use empty plastic bottles and a small ball or rolled up socks and play a game of indoor bowling

Indoor play can be fun and active, the most important thing to remember is that play is learning! For more ideas about activities and articles on child development, academic success, parenting and life skill development, please visit the Michigan State University Extension website.
