Sandra Lupien Takes the Stage at “Advancing Mass Timber Construction” Conference in Atlanta

The 2023 Advancing Mass Timber Conference in Atlanta brought together industry and academic leaders for three days of content and collaborative workshops. Sandra Lupien, Director of MassTimber@MSU, shared the panel: Driving Innovation & Accessibility of Mass Timber as a Building Product with Michaela Harms, Senior Director of Mass Timber at Sterling, and Eric Guenther, Principal at Interstice, LLC.
In architect Kevin Marshall (IDS – Integrated Design Solutions) and Engineer Pete Heeringa (SDI Solutions)—both Michigan-based—presented on case study on their team’s sustainability approach to designing the mass timber STEM Teaching and Learning Facility at MSU.
As part of conference activities Lupien toured The Kendeda Building for Innovative Sustainable Design at Georgia Institute of Technology. This Living Building (International Living Future Institute) includes glulam, as well as the less-commonly used nail-laminated timber or NLT. This project inspired the Michigan NLT pilot projects MassTimber@MSU is leading in the U.P. with funding from a 2022 U.S. Forest Service Wood Innovation Grant.
