Small Farm Sheep and Goat Program
Saturday, March 12 is small farm sheep and goat day at MSU ANR Week.
Michigan is the ideal place to start a small sheep or goat farm. With our excellent markets for sheep and goat meat, and our ideal climate for growing pasture, small farm production on sheep and goats can be profitable. Michigan State University Extension faculty and educators with extensive experience and expertise in small ruminant health, nutrition and management will be presenting a day-long educational event. The event will take place on the MSU Campus during ANR Week and will include information applicable to fiber, meat, and milk production.
8:30 -9 a.m. Registration
9 -9:30 a.m. Nutrition basics and diet formulation for sheep and goats.
9 -10:20 a.m. Choosing pasture and hay species for sheep and goat production.
10:40 a.m. -noon Health care schedules for sheep and goats, vaccination schedules and health management calendars.
Noon- 1 p.m. Lunch
1 -2:30 p.m. Forage quality and selection workshop
2:45 -3:30 p.m. Two individual workshops on producing and marketing high quality meat goats and high quality fleeces.
3:30 – 4 p.m. Panel discussion
