Smart gardening featured at Escabana Kiwanis Home and Garden Show
Cover crops, composting, invasive species and square-foot gardening are key themes at this year’s Smart Gardening booth at the Escanaba Kiwanis Home and Garden Show April 5-7, 2019.
Plan now to attend Michigan State University Extension’s free Smart Gardening presentations held throughout the Escanaba Kiwanis Home and Garden Show/Pancake Days April 5-7, 2019, in the Ruth Butler Building on the Upper Peninsula State Fairgrounds. Show times run from 5-8 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Sunday. From cover crops, invasive plants, community gardens and composting, there is something for everyone to enjoy. Other opportunities and resources that will be available include a Smart Gardening informational booth, which will include a number of free tip sheets on smart soils, smart plants, smart lawns, smart vegetables, smart fruit and smart gardening for pollinators. New tip sheets this year include “Pruning and training backyard fruit trees” and “Pollination in vegetable gardens and backyard fruit.”
Extension Master Gardeners trained in Smart Gardening outreach will be on-hand to help assist with smart gardening questions. Also, on Saturday to the first 500 attendees, Extension Master Gardeners and trainees will be providing a free seed starting activity where you can seed your own vegetable to take home.
No registration is required for the Escanaba Kiwanis Home and Garden Show. Admittance to the home and garden show is free, and pancake feed tickets are available to help support the Kiwanis.

9:00 - 9:45 a.m. Cover Crops for the Vegetable Garden by Monica Jean, MSU Extension. Wondering what are cover crops? How can you best use them in your vegetable garden? Join Monica Jean, MSU Extension field crops educator, to discover the many types and benefits of cover crops. Find out how you can choose the cover crop to meet your garden’s goal.
10:15 – 11:00 a.m. Landowner Stewardship - How to Manage Invasive Plants on your Property by Elisa Desjarlais, Lake to Lake Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area (CISMA). Learn how to identify invasive plants, resources to help manage them and native alternatives to plant with.
12:15 – 1:00 p.m. Smart Gardening Solutions at the Escanaba Community Garden by Rebecca Krans, MSU Extension, and Rosemary Charles, Advanced Extension Master Gardener and community garden coordinator. Interested in learning more about the Escanaba Community Garden? Want to discover “smarter” ways to control pests and diseases while improving your vegetable yield and conserving water? Attend this session for tips and tricks in your own garden.
2:15 – 3:00 p.m. Backyard Composting by Rebecca Krans, MSU Extension. Create your own organic matter and nutrient source and build healthy soils for your vegetable garden or yard. Discover easy tips and tricks to be successful at composting. One lucky attendee will win a worm composting bin to take home.
3:00 – 3:45 p.m. Square Foot Herb Gardening by Rebecca Krans, MSU Extension. Need a convenient way to grow herbs near your kitchen? Learn an easy way to grow fresh herbs for your own enjoyment.
5:15 – 6:00 p.m. An Introduction to Straw Bale Gardening by Jackie Manchester, Extension Advanced Master Gardener. Attend this session to learn the ins and outs of straw bale gardening through the experiences of an Advanced Extension Master Gardener.
