Soybean varieties respond to white mold pressure

Wet, cool late summer conditions induce a white mold variety trial in Sanilac County.

Thumb Ag Research and Education (TARE) personnel established a soybean variety plot north of Sandusky. The plot has been under white mold pressure in 2013. Plots are planted in six 30-inch rows, 90 feet long. The plots were established on a Parkhill Loam on May 27, 2013 3 miles north, and one mile east of Sandusky.

The plot is not irrigated. Significant rain events recorded at the MSU Enviro-weather station, one mile to the southwest of the plot, included 1.64 inches, July 8-10; 1.21 inches, July 31-Aug. 2; and 1.00 inches August 6-August 8. The weather station recorded rainfall each day for the period of Aug. 30 – Sept. 8, for a total of 0.54 inches.

Varieties were planted in five trials – Group 1.9 and Less (20 varieties), Group 2.0-2.2 (26 varieties), Group 2.3 and Greater (32 varieties), Conventional (non-Roundup Ready) (13 varieties), and Liberty Link (7 varieties). Trials were replicated four times.

Varieties were scored for white mold on a 0-5 rating on Sept. 17, 2013. The average plant population at the time of rating was 110,000 plants per acre. Soybeans were in the R6 growth stage. The field has a historically high incidence of white mold. The rating scale was:

0 – No infections on any plants

1 – Fewer than 10% of plants infected

2 – 11-20% of plants infected

3 – 21-30% of plants infected

4 – 31-40% of plants infected

5 – 41% or more of plants infected

TARE Personnel walked through the center of each plot replicate (between rows 3 and 4), and scores were given based on the severity of infection in those two rows. Each of the four replicates was averaged for final results.

White mold pressure was variable throughout the plot. The southeast corner of the field had light pressure, and pressure increased on the west end of the field. The Conventional trial was under light white mold pressure, the Group 2.0 – 2.2 and Liberty Link trials were under moderate/light pressure, and the Group 1.9 and Less, and Group 2.3 and Greater trials were under moderate/severe pressure.

The following tables, presented in order of least severe to most severe infection, show soybean variety response to white mold pressure.
