Summer fun for families abounds on campus

There is nothing better than a great dish of ice cream on a hot summer night, and the best place to grab a cold treat is at the MSU Dairy Store.

EAST LANSING, Mich. – With fuel prices seeming to be on the never-ending rise, many families throughout Michigan are looking for fun activities to do close to home. Luckily, there is plenty of fun to go around this summer at Michigan State University (MSU).

There is nothing better than a great dish of ice cream on a hot summer night, and the best place to grab a cold treat is at the MSU Dairy Store. Located in both Anthony Hall and the MSU Union, the Dairy Store features such famous ice cream flavors as Sesquicentennial Swirl and Final Four Fudge. The Anthony Store is open daily from noon to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and from noon to 8 p.m. on weekends. The MSU Union Store is open daily from noon-8 p.m., Monday through Friday and from noon to 6 p.m. on weekends.

If things that crawl and fly are to your liking, MSU has some great activities to fit your interests. The MSU Bug House, located in the Natural Science Building, offers prearranged tours for people of all ages in groups of 30 or fewer. Schedule yours by calling 517-355-4662. For younger bug-lovers, the MSU Bug House is also featuring two unique camps this summer sure to keep kids entertained while learning along the way. Bug Camp for Kids is a half-day camp designed for 6- to 11-year-old children that takes place June 25 and August 13. The other camp, Insect World, will bring children ages 9 to 12 to MSU on July 17 to 20 for a chance to explore insect life on campus. Families who enjoy gardening will want to visit the Michigan 4-H Children’s Garden at MSU. Many activities take place there throughout the summer for groups of all ages and budgets. To learn more about events and tours, visit their website at http://4hgarden.msu.edu/.

From July 19 to 21, the Michigan Ag Expo takes place at the Ag Expo grounds just off Mt. Hope Road. This signature event, hosted by the MSU College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (CANR), is the state’s largest outdoor farm show. It will showcase a variety of commercial and educational activities and events. Both the farming community and the public are encouraged to attend to learn about agriculture, the state’s second-largest industry. For younger visitors, activities will be available each day at the CANR tent so that everyone can have fun, regardless of age. You can find more information about Ag Expo at www.agexpo.msu.edu.

On July 20, families, day-care providers, summer campers and others are encouraged to attend the Great Dairy Adventure to learn more about cows, how milk and other dairy products are produced, and the dairy industry as a whole. The free event takes place at the MSU Pavilion from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Great Dairy Adventure is a part of the Michigan Dairy Expo, the largest dairy event in the state, which takes place from July 18 to 23.
