Try this garden gem

Sage has a delicate flavor but can boast many benefits.

Gardeners and culinary experts enjoy the availability of fresh herbs, and with summer garden beds being planted a choice of herbs can easily find their way into your favorite planter or garden bed. One particular herb that is noteworthy and easily grown is sage.

The flavor of sage is delicate but it is a powerhouse when it comes to health benefits. It is rich in vitamins A and K as well as flavonoids, Calcium, Magnesium and Iron to name a few. It has also been shown to be an outstanding memory enhancer.

SELFNutrition Data reports “This food is very low in Cholesterol and Sodium. It is also a good source of vitamin C, vitamin E (Alpha Tocopherol), Thiamin and Copper, and a very good source of Dietary Fiber, vitamin A, vitamin K, vitamin B6, Folate, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium and Manganese."

If you choose to grow the herbs and would like to preserve some for future use the National Center for Home Food Preservation recommends that “the more sturdy herbs such as rosemary, sage, thyme, summer savory and parsley are the easiest to dry without a dehydrator. Tie them into small bundles and hang them to air dry. Air drying outdoors is often possible; however, better color and flavor retention usually results from drying indoors”. Dried sage should be kept in a tightly sealed glass container in a cool, dark and dry place where it will keep fresh for about six months. Or you may store fresh sage leaves, carefully wrap them in a damp paper towel and place inside a loosely closed plastic bag. Store in the refrigerator where it should keep fresh for several days
