Update on aster leafhopper infectivity in Michigan for June 27-July 6, 2012

Aster yellows infectivity of aster leafhoppers continues to be high.

According to five aster leafhopper sweep-net samples taken between June 27 and July 6, 2012, aster yellows infectivity ranged from 4.8 to 15.9 percent on carrot, celery and lettuce crops.

Thresholds per 100 sweeps:

12-15 percent infectivity: celery - 2, carrot - 3, lettuce - 1
9 percent infectivity: celery - 3, carrot - 5
5 percent infectivity: celery - 8, carrot - 10

The threshold for lettuce is slightly lower than for celery.
