The Washtenaw County Black Farmers Fund is a coalition of farmers, food businesses and community members striving to build a more equitable food system. In 2022, the community at large helped fundraise over $100,000 to support Black farmers, surpassing their goal of $50,000. Their continued goal is to address the systemic disinvestment and neglect by providing immediate relief to Black farmers and food system workers in Washtenaw County who are facing immediate challenges that threaten their operation. The community still supports this funding and are adding microgrants for 2025 to further enhance their efforts.

The Washtenaw County Black Farmers Fund is providing the opportunity of up to $5,000 in emergency mini-grants.

To be eligible for the grant, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Operate or reside in Washtenaw County, Michigan
  • Identify as Black
  • Actively involved in farming or food system work that adds to the Washtenaw County foodshed
  • Experiencing an emergency that limits the ability to perform effectively (i.e., equipment breakdown, theft, climate-related crop loss, or infrastructure damage).
