Lynn Worden, of the Department of Animal Science, to receive 2024 CANR Excellence in Research Performance and Support Award

Lynn Worden, of the Department of Animal Science, will receive the 2024 CANR Excellence in Research Performance and Support Award on May 2.

The CANR Excellence in Research Performance and Support Award recognizes a support staff member for their outstanding performance at a teaching and research center, in a laboratory, field-based research, or a research administrative support role.

Lynn Worden has served as a research assistant in the Department of Animal Science since 2016. In her role, Worden runs a laboratory in Anthony Hall, helping coordinate research studies at the MSU dairy farm and mentoring both graduate and undergraduate students. Known for being instrumental in the promotion of diversity and inclusion, Worden promotes mutual respect of culture, religion and lifestyle throughout the lab, working to provide an environment that is enjoyable and supportive of all team members. She additionally recognizes that student needs and learning styles may vary and has taken a key role in helping adapt the teaching of research skills to better the student experience.

One nominator notes, “Lynn not only meets, but consistently surpasses the high standards we set for our team which continues to help us produce top-tier research. Her commitment to excellence is evident in every student she mentors, which significantly contributes to the success of our research program.”

Worden graduated from MSU in 2014 with a bachelor’s in animal science. During her time at MSU as a student, she was involved in the dairy club and ASURSA, participated in a study abroad program and served as an undergraduate research assistant for Dr. Adam Lock. Following graduation, she moved to Wisconsin and worked for Rock River Laboratory as a Research and Development Coordinator. Upon moving back to Michigan, Worden worked with the Michigan Milk Producers Association before returning to MSU as a research assistant with Dr. Adam Lock, where she continues to advance research and provide mentorship.

“I can think of no other individual that has had as much influence on the support of dairy nutrition research and students, and the MSU Dairy Farm, than Lynn,” reflected another nominator. “Our lab’s research program and students would not be where they are now without her.”
