MSU Extension empowers people to take control of their personal finances to achieve financial capability and stability. Money management education promotes tracking income and spending, creating an emergency fund, setting attainable financial goals, paying bills on time, obtaining credit reports and reducing debt. This is achieved through classroom education, online learning opportunities, and one-on-one financial coaching in the setting most beneficial for the learning style of individuals.

    Money Smart is an experiential learning series focused on personal and family financial management. Participants attend four to eight sessions (two hours each).

Homeownership Education

Stable homeownership is not only key to the health and wellbeing of individuals but for communities at large. MSU Extension increases knowledge and builds skills in fundamental concepts of purchasing a home. Participants see increased financial stability, reduced dependence on public assistance, and communities see stabilized neighborhoods and property values. This is achieved through classroom education, online learning opportunities, and one-on-one financial coaching in the setting most beneficial for the learning style of individuals.

    Home Buyer Education

    As a HUD and MSHDA-certified counseling agency, MSU Extension helps potential, current and future home buyers/renters to understand the complex home buyer/renter process and learn the true costs of responsible homeownership.

Foreclosure Prevention

Foreclosure proceeds not only impact the financial health of individuals but weighs on people’s mental health. Foreclosed properties also negatively impact the sense of community and can drag down nearby property values. MSU Extension delivers triage, education and one-on-one counseling to homeowners who are facing mortgage and/or property tax foreclosure on 100% homestead properties. Participants come away with a better understanding of their financial and housing situation, the foreclosure process and timeline, what their options are to prevent the loss of their home and what community resources are available to them. MSU Extension outlines actionable steps that allow many people to return to an affordable and sustainable housing situation.
