Scholarships

Each year, the School of Packaging is able to give out annual scholarships thanks to our generous donors, made up of alumni, trade organizations, and industry partners.  In 2019-2020, the SoP along with the Packaging Alumni Association was able to award over $100,000 in scholarships to deserving students.

The scholarship application goes out once per year in April, and is due back September 1st. This application is kept on file for the entire academic year. Scholarships are based on many factors including: academic scholarship, community involvement, merit and financial need, so all students are encouraged to apply.

The deadline for the 2019-2020 Scholarship Application is September 1st, 2019 by 11:59pm. Please follow submission instructions on the application. NO LATE APPLICATIONS ARE ACCEPTED, NO EXCEPTIONS.

Preparation

  • You will be asked to provide dollar amounts of financial aid.
  • You must submit at least one document (Essay described below) as a separate file.
  • You must submit your most recent CV or resume as a separate file.
  • Incoming students will require to submit transcripts from previous institutions or high schools.

Essay Submission:
Submit a 500-700 word essay (PDF FORMAT) about yourself with your name in the top right corner. Include what is unique about you, your background, your interests, and your professional perspective and goals in the packaging profession. Be as specific as possible, such as stating what type of packaging interests you – food, medical, beverage, consumer goods etc.

ATBI Scholarship
Qualifications:

  • Junior standing or higher at time of application
  • Intending to work in the Food Packaging Industry

Boeing Scholarship
Qualifications:

  • Full-time student majoring in Packaging
  • Recommend an overall GPA of 3.2/4.0, possible total
  • Must be of high scholarship merit and potential (as defined by your institution)
  • Must possess excellent leadership and communication skills
  • Interest in the aerospace/defense or cyber security industry preferred
  • Boeing scholars are encouraged to apply for Boeing summer internships

Chemical & Allied Industries of Northwest Ohio Endowed Scholarship Fund
Qualifications:

  • The scholarship will be given to a packaging student who has exhibited passion and excitement for the field of packaging

Cheryl Gilliam Scholarship
Qualifications: 

  • Recipients shall be selected who are enrolled at the second year level in the School of Packaging
  • Intend to pursue a career in the Packaging Industry
  • Additional Essay Required
    • Word Limit: As part of the application process, students will submit a 200-word essay (PDF FORMAT) with your name in the top right corner
    • Topic: “What skills will be critical to packaging professionals in the future?”
    • Sources: Essay will include secondary research, as well as primary discussions with three to five recognized senior level packaging professionals

Crandell Family Scholarship
Qualifications:  

  • This scholarship will be awarded to student that is a resident of the state of Michigan
  • Current junior or senior in good academic standing
  • Maintains a minimum of a 3.0 GPA or higher
  • Majoring in packaging or any future successor units.
  • Intended for tuition.

DOW Chemical Scholarship
Qualifications:  

  • At the discretion of the School of Packaging

Dwight Schmidt Endowed Scholarship Fund
Qualifications:

  • Recipients shall be recommended by the Packaging Alumni Association Board

Founders Packaging and Technology Integrated Solutions (PTIS) Endowed Scholarship Fund
Qualifications: 

  • Recipient shall be junior level or above in the School of Packaging and pursuing a career in the field
  • Recipient is required to have completed junior level packaging courses
  • Scholarship will be given to a packaging student who has exhibited passion and excitement for the field of packaging
  • Recipient is required to be in good academic standing

Gail Tavill Endowed Scholarship in Packaging
Qualifications: 

  • Scholarship recipients will be matriculating students intending to major in Packaging or who are majors in Packaging
  • Preference given to members of the Diverse Leaders in Packaging student organization

Gregory A and Kathleen R Hayes Endowed Scholarship
Qualifications: 

  • This scholarship will be awarded to packaging students traveling internationally for study abroad or internship experiences

HJ Heinz Company Endowed Scholarship in Packaging Science
Qualifications:

  • Students who are majoring in packaging
  • Have at least a 3.5 GPA
  • Have attained at least sophomore status

International Society of Beverage Technologists (ISBT) Scholarship
Qualifications: 

  • Awarded to a student showing interest pursuing a career in the beverage packaging industry through research, course work, or internship

Institute of Packaging Professionals (IOPP) Connecticut Chapter Scholarship
Qualifications: 

  • Member of Coalition of Packaging Professionals and Academic Connections (CoPPAC)
  • Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA

Jamie M. Hill Endowed Scholarship for the School of Packaging
Qualifications:

  • Scholarship recipients should be students with financial need
  • Students in good academic standing

Juice Products Association Scholarship 
Qualifications: 

  • 3.0 GPA
  • Full time student with interest in fruit juice industry/food industry - food tech courses required in curriculum
  • Preference to Junior/Senior involved in student organizations
  • Recipient must submit resume for review by JPA

Katherine Woloson Study Abroad Scholarship
Qualifications: 

  • Recipients must be packaging majors and accepted to a study abroad program
  • Preference given to students with demonstrated financial need

Kimberly-Clark Corporation School of Packaging Endowment
Qualifications:

  • Recipient must be a member of the student chapter of institute of packaging professionals or Coalition of Packaging Professionals and Academic Connections (CoPPAC)
  • Minimum of 2.8 GPA and sophomore status. Recipient shall also be an active participation in community service

Laura Anne Polakowski Endowed Scholarship in Packaging
Qualifications:

  • It is the donors' particular desire that female undergraduate or graduate students pursuing a degree in Packaging benefit from the funds to the extent that MSU may legally do so
  • While the donors do not want to limit the expenditures of the endowment, they would like consideration given to members of Sigma Kappa Sorority

Layfield Lewis Endowed Packaging Scholarship
Qualifications: 

  • Recipients shall be undergraduate and graduate students (including transfer students) 
  • Good academic standing
  • Studying packaging within the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources
  • Recipients shall be residents of Saginaw, Michigan
  • In the event there are no eligible packaging students, the scholarship shall be awarded to students in the College of Engineering
  • Special consideration shall be given to assure that this scholarship supports African American students within the limits of the applicable law

Mark & Catherine Walchak School of Packaging Endowment 
Qualifications: 

  • Students who have overcome significant obstacles during their lives and/or have a severe financial need as determined by the federal government 
  • Students interested in the environmental aspects of packaging

Mary Ann Merrill Packaging Fellowship
Qualifications:

  • Recipients shall be graduate students
  • Preference given to those studying/working in the area of medical packing who have had someone in their lives impacted by cancer

Menasha Corporation Endowed Scholarship
Qualifications:

  • Applicants must have a 3.0 GPA
  • Majoring in Packaging
  • Undergraduate Status

Obolewicz/Debuck Family Endowed Fellowship Scholarship
Qualifications: 

  • Recipients shall be graduate student
  • Preference to those working/studying in the area of medical packaging and who have had someone in their lives impacted by cancer

Paperboard Packaging Alliance Scholarship
Qualifications: 

  • Must be a junior or senior in good standing
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Have expressed a financial need
  • Currently pursuing a Major in packaging

Packaging Alumni Association Scholarship (MSU PAA)
Qualifications:

  • Recipients shall be recommended by the Packaging Alumni Association Board

Paul L & Joanne L Peoples Scholarship
Qualifications:

  • Adult returning to higher education at MSU for baccalaureate or advanced degree
  • Preference to those indicating interest in packaging
  • Preference to those reentering due to the death of a spouse or a divorce
  • Special consideration to single parent applicants
  • Must be admitted to a degree program at the time the award is activated
  • Must be in good academic standing at the time the award is activated

Paul Singh Endowed Fellowship
Qualifications: 

  • The scholarship will be awarded to the most deserving candidate pursuing a PH.D. Degree in Packaging
  • Preference to given to students conducting research in the area of Shock and Vibration/Distribution Packaging

Robert S. Bower, Jr. Memorial Packaging Scholarship
Qualifications: 

  • Preference given to students with interest in beverage packaging
  • One-page essay expressing interest, knowledge, and career aspirations must accompany application
  • Preference given to those with financial need

Selig Group Scholarship
Qualifications: 

  • GPA of 3.0 or above
  • Students unable to apply if graduating in the fall

Silgan Containers Packaging Scholarship
Qualifications: 

  • Minimum 3.0 GPA.
  • Professional aspiration in field of metal, food or beverage packaging
  • Declared & accepted in School of Packaging as a junior (1st priority) / senior (2nd priority)
  • Silgan will review applicants but will give preference to an applicant with financial need

Society of Manufacturing Engineers Endowed Packaging Scholarship
Qualifications: 

  • Full time student in School of Packaging
  • At least junior status
  • Preference to students who demonstrated active pursuit in automotive packaging
  • One page paper expressing interest, knowledge and career aspirations (detailed in general essay)
  • Demonstrate sound academic achievement by maintaining minimum GPA
