Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Legume Systems Research

Andrea Allen describes herself as a development practitioner, social science researcher, educator, and science writer. Her work facilitates socially inclusive approaches to economic development – based on gender, ethnicity, socio-economic status, youth/age -- in project designs, implementation plans, and evaluation approaches, with an emphasis on food systems development. Serving as Associate Professor at MSU, she has collaborated with multiple units across campus -- in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, the College of Social Science, and the Office of International Studies & Programs -- working on teams of social and natural scientists, often translating their work to a wider audience and navigating the intersection of science and the humanities in the process.

Although now officially retired, Andrea continues as an on-call consultant to MSU’s Legume Systems Innovation Lab, working with researchers and other stakeholders to co-create inclusive approaches to livelihood security and food systems development, from field to fork, in Sub-Saharan Africa. She also maintains her affiliation with the MSU Center for Regional Food Systems, and she contributes her skills to building inclusive approaches in the local food system near her home in southwestern Michigan.
