Ashly Nelson is a Community Nutrition Instructor at Michigan State University Extension. She has worked in this capacity since July 2015.
 
In this role, Ashly works with low-income populations and provides youth and adults nutrition education and physical activity in Wayne County through the SNAP-Ed grant. Her work in Detroit and Dearborn schools ranges from direct education with the students to helping coach school administrators and faculty to create healthier, sustainable environments. Ashly has been a part of the Fuel Up to Play 60 school wellness program, which encourages kids to take the lead in the schools when it comes to healthy choices. Her commitment to the program and her students has allowed her to travel to the National Summit in 2017, 2018, and 2019 as a state representative with her students. Along with her involvement in Fuel Up to Play 60, Ashly has presented at several local and national conferences about her work in Policy, System and Environmental Changes.
 
Ashly’s hard work and dedication has allowed her to win several awards such as the Team Institute Team Award for outstanding team efforts, collaboration, programming, outreach and impact in 2018 and the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources Excellence in Teaching Award 2023.
 
Ashly holds a Bachelors in Science in Public Health Education with a Minor in Substance Abuse from Central Michigan University and is currently enrolled to receive her Masters in Public Health.
