Dr. Aswin Kumar Ilango is an environmental chemist specializing in the analysis, fate, transport, remediation, and plant uptake of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in environmental systems. He currently serves as Laboratory Manager of the PFAS Analytical Laboratory at the Michigan State University Center for PFAS Research. More information about the Center is available at https://www.canr.msu.edu/pfas-research/.

His expertise includes advanced analytical chemistry, PFAS quantification in complex environmental matrices, environmental monitoring, remediation technologies (including adsorption and photodegradation), phytoremediation strategies, and the development of novel treatment materials for emerging contaminants.

Dr. Ilango has more than ten years of research experience in environmental and analytical chemistry and contaminant remediation. His work integrates advanced analytical techniques, laboratory experimentation, and applied environmental research to address PFAS contamination in agricultural and environmental systems. He has contributed to multiple federally and state-funded research projects supported by agencies including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), National Science Foundation (NSF), U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), and state-level partners.

His research accomplishments include more than 40 peer-reviewed publications, invited presentations, conference presentations, media coverage, and a U.S. provisional patent (No. 63/652,361) titled “Green and innovative biopolymer-based sorbents for removing PFAS from contaminated water,” focused on PFAS remediation technologies.

Research Interests:

· Development of advanced analytical methods for the environmental monitoring of organic contaminants in complex environmental matrices.

· Detection, identification, and quantification of PFAS, heavy metals, and micro/nanoplastics in water and soil systems.

· Phytoremediation strategies for the uptake and transformation of emerging environmental contaminants.

· Remediation of PFAS-, heavy metal-, and other emerging contaminant-impacted soil, biosolids, and water.

· Design and development of novel adsorbent and functional materials for environmental remediation applications.
