Emma Rice, a Michigan native, is currently a master’s student in the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife at Michigan State University and is pursuing a specialization in gender, justice, and environmental change. Rice received her bachelor’s degree in environmental economics and management from the Department of Agriculture, Food, and Resource Economics at Michigan State in 2020. Rice is interested in the economic and social dynamics of small-scale fisheries, and the role of women in fish value chains.

Rice is advised by Abigail Bennett. Her research will utilize a combination of econometric and spatial modeling to evaluate barriers to market access for female fish traders in Malawi and the potential for policies aimed at addressing them to improve fish trader’s livelihoods.
