Background:

Mark Rey teaches  Advocacy in the Natural Resources Arena (ANR 491), which reviews the types of advocacy groups operating in the natural resources arena, tools and techniques used in environmental advocacy, tactics commonly used in advocacy campaigns and ethical questions that often arise during advocacy work. He also oversees the Demmer Scholars internship program run in conjunction with a natural resource policy class. The internships are with  federal natural resources agency or non-governmental organization (both nonprofit and for profit) operating in the natural resources policy arena in Washington, D.C.  Rey is the former under-secretary for natural resources and environment.  In that position, he oversaw the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Forest Service and Natural Resources Conservation Service.  Rey served as a staff member with the U.S. Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources. He was the lead staff person for the committee's work on national forest policy and Forest Service administration.
