Tanyaradzwa Muzata, Ph.D.
Biography
Tanyaradzwa Muzata, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the School of Packaging at Michigan State University. He joined the school in August 2025. In 2021, he earned his PhD from the Indian Institute of Science in Materials Engineering. He served as a lecturer and Chairperson of the Polymer Technology and Engineering Department at Harare Institute of Technology from 2021 to 2022. He then joined the School of Packaging as a Postdoctoral Researcher from 2022 to 2023. Afterward, he worked in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Hampton University from 2023 to 2025 before returning to the School of Packaging at Michigan State University.
His research primarily focuses on examining mass transfer within packaging systems (i.e., food, beverage, and medical), with a strong emphasis on the environmental impact implications. This involves identifying and continuously monitoring chemicals in packaging systems, assessing their interactions with food, beverages, and medical products, as well as potential environmental effects. This is essential for developing safer and more sustainable packaging practices that address the urgent need to understand the climate impacts of packaging systems, including both their benefits and potential risks.
Dr. Muzata has published several peer-reviewed articles in leading scientific journals and is a co-author of the book Process-Induced Phase Separation in Polymer Blends: Materials, Characterization, Properties, and Applications. He serves on the Early Career Editorial Board for the Journal of Vinyl and Additive Technology (JVAT), a peer-reviewed journal that reports new and original results from both fundamental and applied research involving vinyls and a wide range of additives used in all types of polymers.
