Software Tools for Maximum Likelihood Estimation

The full course reviews probability theory and maximum likelihood concepts and covers both AD Model Builder (ADMB) and Template Model Builder (TMB), two modern software tools fitting of nonlinear and non-normal statistical models by maximum likelihood. TMB is particularly useful for models with random effects, including state space models. These software packages are widely used in fishery stock assessments. The ADMB and TMB portions of the course can be taken separately. Students will need to install software used in the course prior to the course start date, and students enrolling in only the TMB portion of the course will need to enroll in the course at least a week prior to the course start date and review provided materials on probability theory and maximum likelihood estimation before the course starts.

Course Format and Sections

The class is synchronous and online and there are three sections:

1) Full Course -- ADMB and TMB (December 13, 2022 - January 6, 2023):
Class will meet 4 days a weeks (Tuesday-Friday) for 2.5 hours/day.  Times are TBD.

2) ADMB Only (December 13 - December 23, 2023):
Class will meet 4 days a weeks (Tuesday-Friday) for 2.5 hours/day.  Times are TBD.

3) TMB Only (December 27, 2022 - January 6, 2023):
Class will meet 4 days a weeks (Tuesday-Friday) for 2.5 hours/day.  Times are TBD.

Students taking the TMB only section will need to review material and complete exercises on their own before class starts (estimated time 5-7.5 h).

Technology requirements

The course will be taught using R Studio, R, ADMB, TMB, and emacs (using admb and tmb modes).  This software is all freely available and instructions/assistance for installation will be provided prior to class to enrolled students.
