History

Founded on Feb. 26, 1888, as the Michigan Agricultural Experiment Station, Michigan State University AgBioResearch is part of a nationwide network of agricultural experiment stations created after the passage of the Hatch Act to help benefit farmers. In 1925, the Purnell Act added agricultural economics, rural sociology and home economics to the mission. Today, the focus has broadened to include a full spectrum of research in the areas of food, health and the environment.

Mission

Our mission is to conduct leading-edge research that combines scientific expertise with practical experience to advance agriculture, sustain natural resources, generate economic prosperity and enhance the quality of life in Michigan and around the world. We seek to discover economically feasible, scientific solutions to global challenges such as climate change, invasive species and the need to increase food production to meet a growing global population.

Our success is based on outstanding partnerships with industry, MSU Extension, commodity organizations, governmental agencies and exceptional legislative support at the state and federal levels. Research is both applied and basic, and heavily dependent on input from industry and stakeholders.
