Biodegradable High-Barrier Polyester-Based Multilayer Packaging (MLP) for Home and Industrial Compostability

 

Summary:  

Polyester-dominant biodegradable multilayer architecture incorporating biodegradable barrier and tie layers to achieve oxygen and moisture barrier performance while maintaining home and industrial compostability.

Layer architecture: 

  • Structure: Polyester (print) / Tie layer / Barrier layer / Tie layer / Polyester sealant
  • Total gauge: 90 µm 
  • Composition (wt%): Polyester 82%, biodegradable barrier layer 10%, biodegradable tie layer 8% 

Barrier: 

  • OTR (ASTM D3985): <6 cc/m²/day @ 23°C / 90% RH 
  • WVTR (ASTM F1249): <6 g/m²/day @ 38°C / 90% RH 

Mechanical properties: 

  • Tensile (D882): 60 MPa 
  • Elongation: >100% 

EoL: 

  • Biodegradable (home and industrially compostable) 

Applications: 

  • Flexible high barrier packaging 
  • Rigid thermoform
