Department Scholarship Overview

Department of Forestry Scholarship Program 

The Department of Forestry is pleased to announce the availability of scholarship support for incoming or current participants of the Graduate Certificate in Forest Carbon Science, Policy, and Management in the amount of $1,500. The deadline for Spring 2020 applications is December 20th, 2019 at 11:59pm EST.

Eligibility is limited to off-campus students completing the entire Graduate Certificate. Applicants must have a completed and submitted application to the Graduate Certificate in Forest Carbon Science, Policy, and Management in order to be considered for funding.

Department Scholarship recipients will have the opportunity to be featured in outreach materials.

Award: $1,500 

Eligibility: Off-campus students completing the entire Certificate program are eligible.

Application Information 

Applicants must submit the following materials to forestc@msu.edu by the stated deadline: 

  1. Application essay 
  2. Resume/CV 

The essay must describe how the Graduate Certificate in Forest Carbon Science, Policy, and Management will support the applicant’s career objectives. Applicants are encouraged to be concise, and to include specific examples of how skills and knowledge acquired will increase their effectiveness as professionals. The essay should be limited to 350 words. Details concerning financial barriers can be included but should make up less than 100 additional words for a maximum total of 450 words. 

All essays should be in Word document format and include the applicants name and contact information. Resumes must be submitted as a PDF. Application materials must be sent by the deadline to forestc@msu.edu.

Applicants must separately complete their application for the Graduate Certificate in Forest Carbon Science, Policy, and Management in order to be considered for funding. Click here to review application instructions for the Graduate Certificate. 

Timeline

Applications will be accepted until December 20th, 2019 at 11:59pm EST. Selected applicants will be asked to accept the scholarship award and provide a short description of plans to cover remaining program costs before January 6th, 2020. If applicants do not accept the scholarship within this window, funds will be offered to the next ranked applicant.

Funds Distribution

Scholarship funds will be distributed on a ‘’per-course’’ basis – meaning that participants receive one-third ($500) of the total award at the time of enrollment in any of the required Certificate courses. Funds will be directly applied to the recipient's tuition total.

For example, a student participating in a single fall course will receive $500 towards their fall tuition at the beginning of the fall semester. In the next semester, a student participating in two courses will receive the remaining $1,000 of tuition support at the time of spring course enrollment.
