Forestry Digital Badge

September 17, 2015

Learning often takes place outside the classroom in non-formal education settings, such as those offered through Michigan 4-H. To recognize these learning opportunities, and young people’s willingness to learn, grow and develop outside of school, MSU Extension works with the Michigan Department of Education and other relevant organizations to develop “digital badges.” These badges certify that a young person participated in a specific learning experience or developed a certain level of expertise and can be used to by youth when applying for jobs, scholarships or college admittance.

4-H forestry awareness and learning experiences expose youth to the science and math skills behind forestry management. As a result, youth who participate in these activities can earn one of three levels of Forestry Badges: bronze, silver or gold. By earning a Forestry Badge, youth indicate they have either had exposure to (bronze), active engagement with (silver) or verified their proficiency of (gold) specific educational standards.
