April 14, 2021

This document outlines the process that EEs, ESs, PIs and staff working on research and programs should use to request travel approval.

1. When traveling to an Extension office on a re-occuring basis, you must request through your district director.

2. When traveling to an Extension office on a sporadic basis, you must request through the one-time programmatic travel waiver.

3. When traveling for in-state MSU Extension business, except research, to request travel approval, you must:

  • Submit the one-time/programmatic travel waiver.
  • Request travel one month at a time for re-occuring activities.
  • When possible, submit two to three days in advance.

4. When traveling for research, and you are the PI, you must obtain the research project number.

Research Project Number:

  • Submit Field Research Review System.
  • Provide research project number to staff assisting with research.
  • Do not request travel within the Field Research Review System.

To then request travel approval, you must submit the one-time programmatic travel waiver with the research project number included in your request.

5. When traveling for research, and you are not the PI, you must request travel approval via the one-time programmatic travel waiver, including the research project number obtained from the project PI.
