Showcasing Local Foods
Taking Extension to the City: New Approaches for Agriculture

A priority for Cooperative Extension nationwide is to foster and grow community food systems as one step for improving nutrition, fostering local economic development, attracting talent, and improving local food security.  Urban communities have attracted much of the interest in local food system development.  This overview features work in Michigan, the north central states, and other regions to help showcase the key issues and the progress being made, including turning vacant lots in Detroit into urban gardens, establishing regional food hubs, and a research to connect locally produced beef with local food outlets in northern Michigan.
