James A. Brown Jr. Scholarship

The Michigan Green Industry Association (MGIA) has established a scholarship fund in the memory of James A. Brown Jr. The scholarship(s) given will support college students entering into/attending horticulture-related academia.

James was the General Manager of Versalift Midwest, a leading manufacturer of bucket trucks, digger derricks, cable placers and high reach aerial lifts. James was well-known in the industry for his involvement with, and support of, green industry professionals. He was a longtime member of the Association and held the position of Director on the MGIA Board of Directors.

His dedication to his family, friends and customers was limitless. His service, both professionally and personally, touched countless lives. The James A. Brown Jr.

Scholarship Fund was created to honor his spirit of generosity and his dedication to the advancement of young people, both spiritually and professionally.

The James A. Brown Scholarship is offering (5) $3,250 Scholarships for the 2021 Fall school year only.

Please complete and return the attached application with your resume, two letters of recommendation and any photos/information on work you have completed that per- tains to the green industry. Please note that these materials become property of the Michigan Green Industry Association and may not be returned.

Your application must be postmarked by June 30, 2021 - NO EXCEPTIONS. The James A. Brown Scholarship Committee will notify all applicants in August 2021. If you qualify for a scholarship, proof of enrollment will be requested prior to receiving your award.

Criteria for Eligibility

1. Applicant must be enrolled at any Michigan University or
Community College, in a two or four year program relating to
horticulture, landscape, turf maintenance, arboriculture, forestry
and/or golf.
2. Applicant must have a 3.0 grade point average based on a 4.0 scale.
3. Student must be pursuing a career in horticulture (landscape, lawn
maintenance, arboriculture) as evidenced by related work experience.
4. Applicant should show evidence of leadership as exhibited by extra
curricular activities.
5. A desire to pursue professional opportunities with a landscape
management company, tree care company or agency is necessary.
6. Applicant must plan to be employed in Michigan after graduation
for at least two years. Preference will also be given to students with
financial need.
7. Applicant must be carrying at least 6 credit hours at the time the
scholarship is awarded.
