    MSU Extension works to increase farmers’ success while protecting the environment, ensuring food safety, reaching new markets and advancing agriculture through applied research. Agriculture is now one of the fastest growing sectors of the Michigan economy.


  • Manure Hauler Certification Program

    The certification program creates a clear pathway for farms and for-hire manure applicators (firms) to move from training, to certification, to third party audit (incentivized by reductions in insurance premiums) without implementing a mandatory program. There are three levels to the certification program. Passing the online course with a score of 80% or more is one of two components of becoming Level 1 certified.

  • Beef Quality Assurance

    Programs in this area help ensure that food reaching consumers is of utmost quality. Producers and processors learn how their practices affect the final products, and learn tools and techniques to improve overall quality and safety of beef products.

  • Processed Meat Training

    This training is designed for owners, employees, regulators, and anyone looking for education on how to safely make processed meats and meet regulatory requirements at a small processors.

  • Emergency Response to Accident Involving Livestock virtual training

    This virtual training provides participants with the information needed to effectively and efficiently respond to an accident where animals are involved.

  • HACCP Overview for Employees in Meat and Poultry Establishments

    This training is for employees working in meat and poultry establishments that are responsible for monitoring activities. It provides an overview of meat and poultry inspection and the components of a HACCP plan. Participants will learn what biological, chemical, and physical hazards are, the elements of a hazard analysis, examples of critical limits and important monitoring requirements. There are interactive knowledge checks throughout the training and once finished a certificate of completion is issued for the participant. This certificate can serve as documentation of needed training for regulatory or third-party audit purposes.

  • Smart Gardening with Vegetables 101

    This course covers gardening from start to finish: what you need to get started, types of gardening, planning and preparation, soil preparation, plants to select, starting and maintaining healthy plants, garden maintenance, harvest and storage, pollinators and various gardening activities.

  • Beef Cattle Ultrasound Program

    MSU Extension has invested in ultrasound scanning technology in central Michigan. Breeders can scan yearling bulls and heifers for carcass traits and have this information included in National Cattle Evaluation ultrasound EPDs.

    2021 Soybean Harvest Equipment Field Day

    September 28, 2021 11:30AM – 3:30PM In Gratiot County across the road from 6870 E. Tyler Road, Breckenridge, MI. The field and parking is on the north side of E. Tyler road about three quarters of a mile east of Wisner Road.

    Reducing soybean harvest losses is an easy and effective way to increase farm income by $13.85 to $27.70 per acre in 2021. This field day will provide participants with new information and educational materials about reducing soybean harvest losses.
