    In the first session of the Management Considerations for Crossbred Dairy Cattle program hosted by Michigan State University and Ohio State University, Larry Rose (JBS Head of Cattle Procurement) and JT Loewe (JBS Cattle Procurement) have a conversation with the audience discussing marketing aspects of dairy beef. Both Larry and JT share their observations and experiences with crossbred dairy beef cattle at JBS and their future thoughts on the role for crossbred dairy cattle in the beef industry. Additionally, the new contract which Holstein and Holstein crossbred steers can be marketed on with JBS was discussed relative to the old Holstein contract.

    In the third session of the Management Considerations for Crossbred Dairy Cattle program hosted by Michigan State University and Ohio State University, Jerad Jaborek (Michigan State University) and Garth Ruff (Ohio State University) share some on-farm considerations for beef on dairy cattle. Jerad begins by reviewing a on-farm survey about current beef on dairy practices on dairy farms in the Midwestern U.S. Jerad also explains how to interpret beef cattle expected progeny differences (EPD) when selecting a beef sire. Jerad discusses the importance of proper nutrition, including colostrum, calf starter, and the transition to a feedlot ration. Garth discusses some of the marketing options with beef on dairy calves and techniques or management practices that can be implemented to capture additional value.

    In the second session of the Management Considerations for Crossbred Dairy Cattle program hosted by Michigan State University and Ohio State University, Chip Kemp (American Simmental Association and International Genetics Solutions) discusses some hurdles, facts and what-ifs regarding beef on dairy production. As Chip begins, he shares the past history leading up to the current situation we have with beef on dairy cattle production from a sire selection standpoint. Chip highlights traits that producers need to be selecting for when choosing a beef sire to successfully create a profitable crossbred dairy beef calf. Chip briefly discusses a few different marketing avenues, as well as other resources, such as the IGS feeder profit calculator.
