160 acre Pod Drag System

160 acre Pod Drag System Example

Estimating Annual Irrigation Operation Costs 3-10

Pod drag system made up of 36 drag lines varying from 13 to 5 pods in length at a cost of $79,000. System would cover 160 actual irrigated acres providing 2” every eight days or 0.25 inches of water per day. Estimated well cost of $30.000 for a 12” diameter, 100”depth and a 800 gallons/minute. Below ground piping and risers cost of $41,000 Pull trailer and 4-wheel drive ATV with an estimated cost of $8,000 of witch only half of its capacity and use will be dedicated to the irrigation system.

A standard procedure is outlined on page 7 of MSU Extension Bulletin E-2131, “Custom Work Rates in Michigan”. The following would be modification of the DIRTI #5 pricing system.

Ownership Cost

Depreciation: (original cost - salvage value)/years of use

(Pods + pipe/ risers/ valves + ATV) - salvage value/10 years=

($79,000 + $41,000+ $4,000) – ($19,750 + $20,500+ $1,000)/10 = ($124,000 -$41,250) /10 = $8,275

(well cost - salvage value) / 20 years =

($30,000 - $15,000) / 20 = $750

Interest: interest rate * average investment value

6.5% * (original cost + salvage value/2) =

Pivot and Install 6.5% * ($124,000 +$41,250 /2) = $5,371

Well 6.5% * ($30,000 +$15,000 /2) = $1,463

= $6,833

Repair: estimated to between 2 to 5% of original cost

Pivot and installation cost * 3% =

$124,000 * 3% = $3,720

well cost * 2% =

$30,000 * 2% = $ 600

= $4,320

Taxes: no personal property tax in Michigan

the addition irrigation equipment should not increase property taxes

Insurance: estimated at 0.5% * average investment value

0.5% * (original cost + salvage value/2) =

Pivot and Install 0.05% * ($124,000 +$41,250 /2) = $413

Well 0.05% * ($30,000 +$15,000 /2) = $113

= $526

Total Ownership Cost = $8,275 + $6,833 + $4,320 + $526 = $19,954

$19,954/160 acres = $124.71/irrigated acre/year

Operating Cost (per acre) or total actual annual cost

These costs are best handled annually calculated using actual costs at the end of season.

Power: use actual fuel or power bill is recommended estimated power cost:

$3.25/acre in. * 6 in. * 160 acres = $3,120 annually

Range of $1.80 to $5.50/acre in.

Labor cost: recommend use of actual labor bills

2.5 hours /day * 4 day / inch = 10 hour / inch x 6 inches = 60 hours x $15 / hour = $900

Total Operating cost annually $3,120 + $900 = $4,020 / 160 acres = $25.13 /irrigated acre/year

Grand Total Estimated Annual Cost:

Annual Ownership Cost + Annual Operating cost

$124.71/irrigated acre/year + $25.13/irrigated acre/year = $149.84/irrigated acre/year at 6"
