Position Responsibilities

 

Position Summary
This position will support the teaching, research, and service missions of the Department of Forest Engineering, Resources, and Management and the College of Forestry by providing leadership that helps the Pacific Northwest Forest sector remain competitive in the global marketplace and helps maintain economic value in forestlands.

This position represents a key role in shaping the future of forest operations management within Oregon State University and across the forestry sector of Oregon and the world. This position is envisioned as a beacon of innovation, expertise, and leadership, reflecting the College’s commitment to excellence in education, research, and community engagement. 

The position is designed for an individual who can integrate forest management, forest operations, and forest engineering in their teaching and research. The incumbent is expected to emerge as a prominent leader or an ascending star in their field. They will be expected to provide visible disciplinary leadership, advance the mission of the college and department to stakeholders, and disseminate knowledge and its applications to students, the scientific community, forestry practitioners, and policymakers.

The incumbent will teach 1–2 undergraduate courses in forestry and forest engineering in addition to at least one graduate-level course in their area of expertise. As a member of the forestry and forest engineering faculty, the incumbent will be responsible for delivering quality instruction and helping to maintain accreditation by the Society of American Foresters (SAF) and the ABET Engineering Accreditation Commission for the Forestry and Forest Engineering undergraduate degree programs.

Position Duties
50% – Research/Scholarship:
Conduct research and scholarship that contributes to the College of Forestry’s focus on integrating forest management, forest operations, and forest engineering. Develop, manage, and maintain an active, externally funded program of nationally and internationally recognized research and scholarship. Synthesize and communicate results of this research through outlets including refereed journals, books and book chapters, scientific meetings, and professional workshops. 

30% – Instruction/Teaching:
Teach approximately three academic-quarter courses per year, including at least one graduate-level course. Teaching assignments may be adjusted to reflect the FERM Department’s or College of Forestry’s needs, including on-campus and online (e-campus) instruction. Recruit, supervise, support, mentor, and serve as major advisor for 2-4 MS or PhD students. Mentor undergraduate students and provide opportunities for their involvement in conducting research to help foster professional development and placement.

10% – Outreach:
Provide technical assistance and training to stakeholders and clients, e.g., assist forestry companies in assessing and implementing new technologies or developing and offering continuing education programs.

10% – Service:
Participate annually in departmental, college, and university-level affairs and governance, including leadership in curriculum and program development. Serve as a mentor to other faculty and staff in the department. Service is also expected in support of industry, academic organizations, facilitating student-industry interface and other professional groups and associations. 
Minimum/Required Qualifications
    • Completed Ph.D. (or equivalent degree) in Forest Operations, Forest Business, Forest Economics, Forest Engineering, Forest Management, or other closely related field and relevant experience to Forestry.
    • Life experience, training, or education that demonstrates a commitment to promoting and enhancing equity and diversity and creating an inclusive work environment.
    • Demonstrated ability to teach courses in forest operations, forest engineering, and forest management.
    • Effective communication skills that enable collaboration with a broad spectrum of students, teachers, researchers, natural resource professionals, public officials, and external groups such as industry and family forest owners, tribes, and agencies.

 

 
For individuals seeking the rank of Associate or Full Professor:
  • Candidate should meet the OSU teaching, advising, research, and service criteria for appointment at the desired rank (see the OSU Faculty Handbook for details). OSU will consider previous years of experience at other, similar institutions towards timelines for rank or tenure promotions.
 
This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
Preferred (Special) Qualifications
  • Industry or agency experience in forest operations or forest engineering.
  • Experience teaching at a college or university level, especially in the areas of forest operations, harvest optimization, harvesting systems, logging mechanics, or forestry capstone.
  • Demonstrated success in teaching, training, and mentoring students or professionals.
  • Experience in developing and managing a research program, including writing proposals to secure research funds.
  • Demonstrated interest in active forest management and ability to contribute steadily to professional and technical knowledge that benefits the state of Oregon and the forest products industry. 
  • Demonstrable commitment to advancing forestry, forest operations, and forest engineering as professions.
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
The ability to work in varied fields and weather conditions is required as needed; this includes extensive walking/hiking on uneven ground and uncomfortable weather conditions (e.g., heat, cold, rain, wind, poison oak, heavy pollen counts). The position requires travel to research sites, workshops, and conference venues. 
Decision Making/Guidelines
The incumbent will be responsible for technical and fiscal management of research projects and related grants and contracts and may direct staff members as appropriate for research projects. They will evaluate student performance in classroom and research settings and may participate in decisions on awarding degrees. As appropriate, they will collaborate with faculty, students, staff, and other stakeholders.
