Matt Syal, PhD, professor of construction management in MSU’s School of Planning, Design and Construction, attended the 12th annual Symposium on Sustainable Development in New Delhi, India. He served as the symposium chair and delivered the keynote address.

This symposium is jointly organized by the Lady Irwin College at the University of Delhi and the School of Planning, Design and Construction at Michigan State University. The event has been jointly organized for the last 12 years, with a Michigan State University-approved academic partnership agreement in place for the last 10 years.

The symposium is funded by the Ministry of Power in the Government of India. The theme of this year’s symposium was “Energy Efficiency in buildings: Bringing transformation through sustainable partnerships” and included eminent industry and government speakers from India.

As an academic partner, MSU has helped the Lady Irwin College create a Master of Science and a doctoral program in sustainable development within the last decade as part of a Global and Area Thematic Initiative grant (U.S. Department of Education funds via the MSU Center for Advanced Study of International Development in International Studies & Programs).

On Syal’s most recent visit, he also chaired the annual Academic Task Force, attended the proposal defense of two new doctoral students and recognized the completion of two recent doctoral candidates in 2017-18, Meenal Jain and Gagan Preet Kaur.

Jain’s thesis won the Gold medal as the best PhD work in the college in 2017-18 and she was hired by the college as an assistant professor in 2017. Kaur was hired by the Indian Federal Government as a consultant in the Ministry of Skill Development.
